EEGC AI-edit module

Two parts: a Moodle Quiz on editing & AI literacy (2.5% objective quiz + 7.5% open-ended report), and the AI-assisted Review module (Part 2 of Writing). This page is the planning draft for both.

Part 1

Quiz — editing basics & AI literacy

A Moodle quiz in the main course room. Weighting 2.5% objective quiz + 7.5% open-ended report · 20–30 minutes · auto-graded. It is the readiness gate for Part 2: it makes sure every student can use the four writing aspects, think critically about AI, follow the review workflow, and arrive with a working HKBU key.

Learning objectives

1Name the four writing aspects — Content & Ideas, Organisation, Vocabulary, Grammar — and recognise a revision targeting ONE aspect.
2Explain what an LLM is (and isn't) — it predicts plausible text, is not a search engine, can be confidently wrong, and must not write for you.
3Describe the review workflow — paste essay → pick one aspect → negotiate → decide ACCEPT / REJECT / ADAPT with a reason → before/after revision → submit.
4Explain API + API key + BYOK — what a key is, why your own key matters, how to get the HKBU key, how to keep it safe.

BYOK — how to get your HKBU GenAI API key

  1. Go to https://genai.hkbu.edu.hk.
  2. Click "Sign in with HKBU SSOid" and log in with your HKBU NetID and password.
  3. Open the API key / developer area and generate or copy your personal API key.
  4. Copy the key. When the AI-editing tool asks for it, paste it there — it stays in your browser and is never stored by the course platform.
  5. Never share your key, and never paste it into a site you don't trust.
⚠ To confirm before go-live: the exact in-portal navigation ("generate API key") inside genai.hkbu.edu.hk — verify against the live portal or ITO's guide.
Part 2

AI-assisted Review — the module

Students take the in-class point-of-view essay they wrote (Writing Part 1) and use an AI tutor to revise ONE writing aspect, keeping every final decision for themselves. The AI coaches with questions, hints and short examples — it never rewrites for the student.

The student journey

  1. Ready — HKBU GenAI key obtained (BYOK), confirmed in the Part-1 quiz.
  2. Paste the first-draft essay from the in-class test.
  3. Diagnose (AI Analysis) — the tutor flags the weakest of the four aspects.
  4. Choose ONE aspect — Content & Ideas / Organisation / Vocabulary / Grammar.
  5. Negotiate (Critical Review) — one suggestion at a time; answer ACCEPT / REJECT / ADAPT with a one-sentence reason. Minimum 2 rounds.
  6. Refine (Revised Submission) — the student's own edits accumulate; a before/after change is captured.
  7. Report — a rubric-mapped report quoting the student's own decision statements.
  8. Reflect — four short questions (aspect & why; what you rejected/adapted & why; one before/after; what you learned).
  9. Submit to Moodle — chat history + original & revised essay + reflection.

Rubric (settled)

CriterionWeightWhat it scores
A · Negotiating with the AI3Follow-ups, "why?", push-back, alternatives
B · Critical Review of AI Suggestions5 (primary)ACCEPT/REJECT/ADAPT + a reason on every suggestion — the anti-ghostwriting guarantee
C · Refining Process3Visible before/after improvement in the chosen aspect

The tool

A zero-dependency Node server (aiedit-prototype/) proxies chat to the HKBU GenAI Azure-style gateway, runs the guided revision workflow, and saves work under anonymous links. Two apps, one server: AI-assisted Review (/) and Writing Lab (/writing.html).

BYOK module

The student's own HKBU key is used per-request and kept in the browser only (sessionStorage) — the course server never holds it. Default model gpt-4.1-mini; vision gpt-4.1. Fallback: a portable prompt pack for any chatbot.

Submission & marking

Students submit to the single Moodle assignment. A Gen-AI rater prompt produces a first-pass score per criterion with quoted evidence + a draft comment; the teacher reviews and finalises (human-in-the-loop).
